Chapter One

The dark

On an ordinary day in Rostraver Township, Pennsylvania, a raccoon slipped into a storm drain and could not climb back out. Small, wet, and alone in the concrete dark — the kind of stuck that no amount of struggling fixes.

The dish soap era
